“Disarmed: The Story of the Venus de Milo” is set in the spring of 1820, on the Aegean island of Melos, where a farmer unexpectedly unearthed the statue that would come to be known as the Venus de Milo. The story examines the excitement surrounding the sculpture’s discovery, the battle for its possession, the disputes over its authenticity, and its ultimate mystique and legacy.
